Dog-friendly walks in the Lake District

The Lake District National Park is a fantastic destination for dog owners looking to explore the beautiful countryside with their furry friends. There are countless dog-friendly walks throughout the area, offering stunning views of the mountains, lakes and forests that make this part of Cumbria so special. From leisurely strolls along picturesque rivers and streams to more challenging hikes up steep hills and rugged terrains, there is something for every type of hiker and their four-legged companion.

Here are some of our favourites:

Catbells, Keswick

A popular walk with impressive views over Derwentwater, Keswick and Borrowdale, as well as the surrounding fells. The moderate route is around 3.5 miles long and begins at the Hawes End Landing Stage which you can reach via the Keswick Launch. Don't let the name put you off - dogs are very welcome!

Helm Crag, Grasmere

Also know as the "Lion and the Lamb" thanks to its unique rock formations, Helm Crag offers a challenging hike amidst the Central Fells, just north of Grasmere. There are several walks to the summit, with the most popular being the route from the Village of Grasmere, which is around 4 miles.

Loughrigg Fell, Ambleside

A moderate hike which takes you from the popular town of Ambleside, over the top of Loughrigg Fell, along the Loughrigg Terrace and across the stepping stones to Rydal Cave.

Wansfell Pike, Ambleside

A challenging hike beginning and ending in Ambleside, where you'll be rewarded with incredible views over Lake Windermere and the surrounding fells. Due to the narrow lanes and steep terrain, both dogs and their owners will need to be fit and healthy to complete this 6-mile route.

Rydal Water, between Grasmere & Ambleside

This peaceful walk in the Rothay Valley takes you around Rydal Water, a small, tranquil lake which connects with Grasmere. One of the most popular things to do is to walk up to "Wordsworth's Seat" and admire the landscape as the renowned author used to.
