In North Devon, our favourite dog-friendly beaches are characterised by their wide expanses of golden sand and rugged cliffs, providing plenty of space for dogs to roam and play freely. These beaches are often secluded and unspoiled, offering a sense of tranquility and privacy for both dogs and their owners to enjoy. In North Devon, you can expect to find long stretches of coastline where dogs are welcome year-round, making it a perfect destination for those seeking a peaceful and relaxing beach experience with their four-legged friends.

Lynmouth Beach

Lynmouth Beach is a picturesque pebble beach in Lynmouth Bay, nestled between the hills of Exmoor and the Bristol Channel. Westward Ho! Beach is a wide, sandy beach that stretches for miles and is perfect for dogs who love to run and play. With plenty of space to explore and clear waters to splash in, it's a firm favorite among four-legged friends. The beach is backed by the seaside town of Westward Ho! where you can make the most of dog-friendly cafes and pubs.
Tip: Sarah from Hoseasons, who has been to this beach with a dog, says "there's usually a Hocking's ice cream van at Westward Ho! and their vanilla flavour is the best, perfect for a small post-beach pup cup as well as for a human treat!"

Restrictions: Seasonal restrictions are in place from May-September, where dogs are not allowed on the central and southern sections of the beach. Dogs are still welcome on the northern end of the beach, and the entire beach is dog-friendly for the rest of the year

Putsborough Sands
Putsborough Sands
Putsborough Sands is another top choice for dog owners, with its scenic dunes and pristine sands. The beach stretches for three miles, all the way from Woolacombe and Morte Point in the north down towards Baggy Point in the south. Dogs are allowed off-lead on this beach, so they can really stretch their legs and enjoy the fresh sea air.

Restrictions: Seasonal restrictions are in place from April-October, where dogs are not allowed on the area of beach below the beach shop. Dogs are still welcome on the beach north of the shop, and the entire beach is dog-friendly at all other times

Welcombe Mouth Beach

Tucked away on the North Devon coast, Welcombe Mouth is a secluded beach surrounded by cliffs and rugged coastline - it's a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) thanks to its fascinating geological features. The sand and shingle beach can be hard to find, and is best accessed on foot via the South West Coast Path or down one of the tracks, but once you get there you'll be rewarded with wild, unspoilt shores and incredible rock formations. You can your dog can enjoy a peaceful walk along the shore at any time of year, taking in the stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean.
Tip: Due to the lack of facilities and difficulty accessing the beach, this may not be the best beach for families with young children, although there are interesting rock pools to explore and a beautiful waterfall. The beach is also not ideal for swimming as there are so many rocks.

Although there are some restrictions in place during the summer months, there are areas around Croyde Bay you can walk your dog at any time of year.

At low tide, you can explore the many rock pools that appear on both sides of the beach.
Tip: The beach is right by the South West Coast Path and Hillsborough Nature Reserve, so there are plenty of great dog walks locally.
