Road signpost, A591 Keswick to Ambleside and Windermere

Go for a scenic drive

The Lake District is home to some of the most beautiful landscapes in England, and a rainy day can provide a different perspective on the scenery. Take a leisurely drive through the winding country lanes and enjoy the misty views of mountains, lakes and forests. Even when it’s raining, there are still plenty of routes to take that offer breathtaking views of the rolling hills and charming villages. No matter how you choose to explore the Lake District, there are countless scenic drives that can be enjoyed even when the weather isn’t cooperating. So grab your umbrella, hop in the car, hop on a bu, or board a train, and prepare to be amazed by the natural beauty of this stunning region.

By car...

One of the most popular scenic drives in the Lake District is the drive along the A591, which runs from Kendal to Keswick. This route takes you through the heart of the Lake District National Park, passing by beautiful lakes such as Windermere and Thirlmere, as well as iconic peaks like Helvellyn and Skiddaw.

By bus...

For those looking to take in the sights without having to drive, the 555 bus route is a fantastic option. Why not hop aboard the historic miniature railway of the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway - known as "La'al Ratty" (local for "little railway") and one of the longest narrow gauge railways in England! Originally built in the 19th century for iron ore transport, the 7-mile line from Ravenglass to Boot traverses mountains and valleys, offering panoramic views of fells, rivers and woodlands. Those who fancy a boat trip as well can benefit from a discount when you buy a joint ticket with the railway and Ullswater Steamers.

Another popular train journey to check out is the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway, a charming heritage steam train that runs between Haverthwaite and the southern tip of Lake Windermere. If you're looking to make a day of it, the railway offers a combined ticket with a boat cruise on Lake Windermere, allowing visitors to enjoy both the railway and the scenic beauty of the lake. If you want to explore Lakeside, don't miss the Lakes Aquarium, a fascinating world of marine-life from across the globe including sea creatures, colourful fish and even otters!

Embrace the rain!

Finally, perhaps it's time to use the age-old saying: "there's no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing". So, unless it's a thunderstorm or a torrential downpour, why not embrace the elements and head out for a walk in the rain? There are numerous walking trails that offer stunning views regardless of the weather. Just make sure to dress appropriately and bring waterproof gear to stay dry. Alternatively, get stuck into some watersports where you'll get wet anyway!

Plan your Lake District break come rain or shine
