The Eden Estuary, just to the north, is the third oldest nature reserve in the country, famous for its bird life. Seals, porpoises and dolphins are regular visitors to the Tentsmuir Forest sandbanks, whilst deer, osprey and peregrines are frequently sighted in the woods and lochs just inland.
