Founded in 1178 by King William the Lion, the historic abbey features a mix of Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles, and has endured periods of conflict and warfare, notably during the Wars of Independence. You can visit the abbey as part of the Arbroath Abbey Heritage Trail, a 90-minute trail that begins at Arbroath Harbour and takes you to the town's notable historic sites.
