Croft Head is a new shepherds hut located on Barkbeth Farm on the foothills of Skiddaw with an elevated position, taking advantage of the amazing views onto Bassenthwaite Lake. Once you are inside the shepherds hut you will instantly forget about the journey you have just had, as you are surrounded by the stunning scenery of the Lake District’s beautiful views, as well as being able to soak up the morning sun.

This property boasts private parking and access to some great local walks, wildlife and cycle routes. Croft Head is ideally located between the popular tourist town of Keswick, which is only 6 miles away, and 9 miles away is the charming market town of Cockermouth - the birthplace of William Wordsworth and the oldest town in Cumbria. Nearby are Whinlatter Visitor Centre and Dodd Wood where you can visit the Ospreys Viewpoint.

A beautiful location and the hut was well equipped and comfortable, if a little small. Matt, the owner and farmer, was very helpful. There is a direct path up to Skiddaw from the farm.

I booked Croft Head for a couple of quiet nights away, and I got exactly that. Situated about a mile away from the nearest main road, only the sheep in the neighbouring fields and the very occasional farm vehicle broke the complete silence in the area.The website photos don't quite do the view justice: the evening view of Bassenthwaite Lake is nothing short of spectacular.The accomodation was cosy and really well equipped: air fryer, microwave, hot plate, small fridge, pans, plates and crockery. It is situated really well for days out to surrounding tourist attractions (Keswick is a 10 minute drive), but be aware that you will need to drive to everything: nothing is within walking distance, including the nearest pub. Croft Head is a great little getaway that has a lot of charm to it, and I would happily return in the future.

We enjoyed a lovely weekend break in Croft Head. The shepherd's hut afforded a tranquil setting and breath-taking views. The sheep in the adjoining field were welcome companions too. The accommodation was impeccably clean and comfortable. The only downside was there being no obvious walks from the hut. As it was situated on a working farm we weren't sure if we could take an evening stroll. If suggested enhancements would be well received, a night light near to / clipped onto the bed would have been appreciated, and perhaps drawers under the bed so some of our luggage could have been stored away in the compact space. All in all, the perfect place for a short stay in the Lakes.
