Castle Howard is the stately home of the Howard family, local landowners of the Howardian Hills. There are various routes you can take to explore this grand estate, which is dotted with statues and temples. Explore Ray Wood, one of the largest ancient woodlands in Yorkshire with majestic trees and diverse wildlife; visit the Atlas Fountain, one of the most iconic features in the grounds which takes you through the South Parterre formal garden; or follow the path around the Great Lake, which gives you scenic views of the water and the Mausoleum.
This long-distance route was created to mark the 100th anniversary of Yorkshire County Council. It spans 25 miles and starts or ends in the city of York, traversing through the Yorkshire countryside. The sections in the Howardian Hills AONB take you through woodlands, along country lanes, across open fields and near picturesque villages like Crayke, Brandsby and Sheriff Hutton, with their traditional stone cottages and historic churches. It’s typical to walk a short section of the trail or complete the entire route as part of a multi-day walking holiday.
This gentle walk begins in the picturesque village of Terrington, at the charming village hall. It’s considered a relatively easy walk so is a great choice for families looking to explore the local area. The scenic route takes you through enchanting woodlands and valleys, offering some incredible sweeping views of the surrounding Mowthorpe Dale. You’ll walk past fish ponds, over kissing gates and through the tiny unspoilt village of Granthorpe. Finish with refreshments at Terrington Village Hall or a hearty meal in the local pub.
