Known for its rugged moorlands, wild ponies, granite tors and ancient ruins, Dartmoor is a captivating region in the southwest of England. Given its stunning countryside and status as a National Park, it’s no surprise that Dartmoor offers a plethora of outdoor activities to enjoy on your UK holiday. Hike ancient pathways like the Templer Way or Abbot’s way; climb the iconic Haytor Rock; go cycling along the Granite Way or Drake’s Trail; or canoe your way around the River Dart. Dartmoor is also where letterboxing originated, an activity that combines treasure hunting and orienteering as you use clues and coordinates to locate hidden boxes in scenic outdoor locations. The area is full of enchanting towns and villages that are simply bursting with history and character. Discover Dartmoor’s infamous prison in Princetown, explore the galleries and shops in Chagford, or admire the pretty thatched cottages and historic church in Widecombe-in-the-Moor. Plan your delightful Devon escape to one of our Dartmoor holiday cottages.

This gentle circular walk is centred around the 150-acre Burrator Reservoir in the southwest of Dartmoor. It’s a relatively easy walk, so a great option for families. The route takes you along the shores of the reservoir, through forest pathways, past ancient stone rows and the slopes of Sheeps Tor, and back round to Norsworthy Bridge. There’s usually an ice cream truck parked by the bridge, so many people choose to start or finish their walk here!
This captivating trail follows the tumbling River Teign as it meanders through ancient woodland on the northern edge of Dartmoor National Park. The route starts at the National Trust’s Castle Drogo visitor centre - close to one of our Dartmoor holiday lodges - where you can learn more about the area’s history and the fairytale castle ruins. As you traverse the gorge, you’ll encounter stunning views of the river and dense woodlands rich in wildlife. The grassy banks beside Fingle Bridge are a lovely spot for a picnic, a pub lunch at the Fingle Bridge Inn or for spotting the elusive white stag (if you’re lucky!) You can sometimes see leaping salmon in the river here as well.
This scenic route highlights the iconic Haytor Rock, one of the most popular places to visit in Dartmoor National Park. Beginning and ending at the National Park Visitor Centre in Haytor, it’s a moderate circular walk that usually takes a couple of hours to complete. Those who climb to the top of Haytor will be rewarded with incredible panoramic views of Dartmoor’s dramatic landscape.
